In the fitness industry everyone is looking for the "optimal" nutrition plan and workout program. While there is nothing wrong with trying to optimize things, the truth is that (in many cases) this is putting the cart before the horse.

The first thing I do with a potential client is try to get a bead on what type of exercise and nutrition they prefer. After all, if you don't enjoy your nutrition/workout program, then the odds of you doing it consistently are nil.

After all, consistency is the key to a great physique. As much as some coaches may preach "volume" or "intensity" or "full range of motion" as integral to getting great results, all of these pale in comparison to consistency.

A person who consistently works out a few times a week and consistently eats the right amount (enough calories & protein), will outpace all of the guys around them. Why? Because, let's face it, most guys don't regularly work out and eat correctly.

They may do it sporadically, but not consistently.

So, what's the takeaway? If you want to win in the physique game then you are going to need to focus on long term results. You are going to have to consistently perform proper workouts and have high quality nutrition in order to get great results.

That means starting with one day of correct fitness behaviors. After you complete that day, get up and do it again. Each day is a tiny win, and it gets you that much closer to your goal. As these days stack up the results will compound.

Okay, fine, but how long does it take? I tell all of my clients that within a few months of starting a high quality workout/nutrition program they will literally be a different human. They will be walking around in a new body, one that is far stronger and leaner than the one they are in now.

There aren't many habits in life that can impact your life like getting in great shape. For example, getting fit is far superior to buying a new car, because how many hours a day do you drive? 1 hour? 2 hours tops?

Now compare that to how many hours you are in your body. Unless you are having out of body experiences, you are in that thing 24/7!

So, take it from me, focus on being consistent. The first place to start is your workout routine. Go to the gym (or your garage if you have some equipment), and get a workout in 2-3 times a week. I don't care if all you know how to do is push ups and body weight squats - something, anything, is better than nothing.
